Interfering factor: nose tip

We are often visited by patients whose nose is bothering them. However, it is not the entire nose or even a hump, it is just the tip of the nose that is too large, wide and raised or lowered. Although the tip of the nose only makes up a small part of the entire nose, it can give a person's face a specific character. For example, sunken nose tips often look witchy and old. Rhinoplasty can help in cases where the tip of the nose is reduced, narrowed, raised or lowered. The aim here is to create a nose that looks harmonious in the overall appearance of the face and is pleasing to the patient.

Compared to actual rhinoplasty, known as septorhinoplasty, the correction of the tip of the nose is a less complex procedure, as it does not involve any changes in the bone structures on the bridge of the nose. As a result, the swelling is significantly lower than with extensive rhinoplasty, which often involves an adjustment of the tip of the nose.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a nose operation that focuses on the tip of the nose. To remodel these, only soft tissues and cartilage tissue are removed. In some cases, especially in the case of so-called revision rhinoplasty (subsequent procedure, secondary correction), cartilage transplants from one's own ear can also be used to build up the tip of the nose. In this way, the tip of the nose can be optimized and modified in a variety of ways. Both a reduction and enlargement as well as a raising or lowering of the tip of the nose are possible as part of nasal tip correction.

How does the procedure work?

Rhinoplasty usually takes one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia at one of our partner clinics in Frankfurt am Main. The surgical procedures of rhinoplasty are performed via the nostrils and a small incision on the nasal bridge. Depending on the goal of the correction, we shorten the anterior nasal septum, remove cartilage or change the shape of removed cartilage. If the tip, i.e. the tip of the nose, is built up, a cartilage transplant may be necessary. During surgery, we remove this cartilage transplant, either from the patient's ear or from a part of the nasal septum. As soon as the framework of the new nose tip is in place, the wounds are sutured, silicone tubes are placed in the nose and the nose is protected with tape and a thermoplastic splint.

What are the criteria for being able to perform rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is recommended for patients who are generally satisfied with the shape of their nose but want a finer or larger and/or lowered or raised nose tip.

The following points must be clarified in detail before rhinoplasty:

  • Request to change the tip of the nose
  • Healthy skin around the nose
  • Tested condition of nasal cartilage
  • Desired shape of the bridge of the nose

What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?

Advantages over septorhinoplasty:

  • Shorter operation time
  • Lower costs
  • Less swelling and bruising
  • Shorter healing process

The main advantage of nasal tip correction is that a major effect can be achieved with comparatively little effort.

The nasal skeleton, i.e. the bony part of the nose, remains unaffected during nasal tip correction. As a result, the operation takes less time than other types of rhinoplasty. For this reason, the costs of rhinoplasty are significantly lower and potential complications are also reduced. Nevertheless, changing the tip of the nose also has a major effect on the overall appearance of the face.

Because rhinoplasty is surgery, swelling is safe. However, swelling is significantly lower during nasal tip correction. The healing process is also relatively short, so that the end result can be seen just three to 6 months after the operation.

How do I choose the right clinic?

Since the nose is a central part of your face and is therefore always openly visible, you should only be operated by a professional with extensive experience. Dr. Berkei is a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery and one of the few who specializes in rhinoplasty. She has already performed over 6,500 rhinoplasty procedures and therefore has the necessary level of experience, which you can get an idea of on the basis of before-and-after photos during a consultation.
