Vitamin C Infusion in Frankfurt: Procedure and Evidence
.avif)
In brief: A vitamin C infusion delivers vitamin C directly into a vein. This produces blood levels that tablets cannot reach, because the gut only absorbs a limited amount. Whether these high levels bring any health benefit for healthy people has not been proven. Before any high dose, blood tests are required, including kidney function and a test for G6PD deficiency.
Vitamin C drips are everywhere today: in drip bars, in wellness lounges and all over Instagram. The promises range from more energy to glowing skin. In our practice we see every day that most people mainly want an honest assessment. That is what this article offers: what your body needs vitamin C for, how an infusion differs from tablets, what an appointment with us looks like and who should not have a vitamin C infusion.
What your body needs vitamin C for
Vitamin C, chemically ascorbic acid, is a water soluble vitamin that humans cannot produce themselves. Among other things, it is involved in collagen formation, in the normal function of the immune system, in absorbing iron from food and in protecting cells from oxidative stress.
A true vitamin C deficiency is rare in Germany. People at higher risk include those with a very limited diet, heavy smokers, people with certain bowel conditions and patients recovering from major surgery. A blood test shows whether you are deficient.
Infusion or tablet: the key difference
When you swallow vitamin C, your gut absorbs only a limited amount. Above a certain dose, blood levels barely rise any further and the kidneys excrete the excess. Pharmacokinetic studies show that an infusion reaches considerably higher blood levels than any tablet (studies on PubMed).
These high levels only last a few hours, after which the body excretes the surplus. In everyday terms: if you are healthy and eat a varied diet, fruit and vegetables usually cover your needs. An infusion does not replace that; it is a targeted medical treatment for individual cases.
What studies on vitamin C infusions show
High dose intravenous vitamin C has been studied for many years, mostly in serious illness. In cancer care it is being researched as a supportive measure; an effect against tumours has not been demonstrated in humans. In sepsis on intensive care units, a large trial found no benefit.
For healthy people there are only a few, mostly small studies. There is currently no reliable evidence that a vitamin C infusion prevents infections, visibly changes the skin or boosts performance. We tell you this just as openly in person as we do here.
Who a vitamin C infusion may be suitable for
After a medical assessment, a vitamin C infusion can make sense if you have a deficiency that diet or tablets cannot sufficiently correct, for example because of impaired absorption in the gut. Beyond that, we offer it on request after a detailed consultation in which we also discuss the limited evidence.
If you constantly feel exhausted or keep catching colds, the cause should be investigated first. Common culprits are iron deficiency, thyroid disease, low vitamin D or vitamin B12, or poor sleep. That is why every first infusion with us starts with a blood test.
How a vitamin C infusion works at our practice
1. Medical consultation and baseline bloods
We go through your medical history, your medication and any contraindications, and take a blood sample. Before a high dose we check your kidney function, among other things, and rule out G6PD deficiency.
2. Individual dosing
Based on your results, we decide together whether an infusion makes sense for you and at what dose. We give vitamin C as a short infusion or as part of a combination.
3. The infusion
You sit comfortably in our infusion lounge on the Fressgasse in central Frankfurt. How long it takes depends on the dose; usually it is under an hour. You can read, work or simply relax.
4. Observation
After the infusion you stay with us for about 15 minutes before heading back into your day.
How often does a vitamin C infusion make sense?
Fixed weekly protocols, which you often read about, have no scientific basis. If you have a proven deficiency, frequency and duration depend on your blood results, which we monitor over time. In all other cases we discuss after the first infusion whether a further one makes sense for you and at what interval.
Side effects, risks and contraindications
Vitamin C is usually well tolerated as an infusion. Possible effects include bruising or vein irritation at the puncture site, a cold sensation in the arm or mild dizziness. Allergic reactions are very rare. That is why every infusion takes place under medical supervision.
Important if you have diabetes: High vitamin C levels can distort some blood glucose meters and glucose sensors for several hours, showing falsely high readings. Please tell us in advance which system you use.
A high dose vitamin C infusion is not suitable if you have G6PD deficiency, because it can then damage red blood cells, if you have impaired kidney function or a history of kidney stones, if you have an iron storage disorder, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding without a clear medical indication.
How much does a vitamin C infusion cost?
A vitamin C infusion is a self pay service and is billed according to the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). The cost depends on the dose, the duration and the lab tests required. German statutory health insurance does not cover it. Private insurers reimburse it at most when it is medically necessary, for example with a proven deficiency, so it is best to check with your insurer beforehand. You will receive the expected costs at your consultation before any treatment begins.
Frequently asked questions about vitamin C infusions
How long does a vitamin C infusion take?
It depends on the dose. The infusion usually takes less than an hour, plus about 15 minutes of observation. For your first appointment, allow extra time for the consultation and blood test.
How long do the effects of a vitamin C infusion last?
The very high blood levels fall again within a few hours as the kidneys excrete the excess. How long someone personally notices a difference varies and is not scientifically established.
How often should you have a vitamin C infusion?
There is no universal schedule. With a deficiency we follow your blood results; otherwise we decide together after the first infusion.
Can you overdose on vitamin C?
With healthy kidneys, the body excretes excess vitamin C. With impaired kidney function, kidney stones or G6PD deficiency, however, high doses can cause harm. That is why we check these points before every high dose.
Do you offer appointments in English?
Yes. Our team speaks English, and the consultation, the information sheets and your appointment can all be in English.
Where can I get a physician supervised vitamin C infusion in Frankfurt?
At our practice on the Fressgasse in central Frankfurt, every infusion starts with a medical consultation and a blood test. You can find all details on our page IV infusions in Frankfurt.
Conclusion
A vitamin C infusion reaches blood levels that tablets cannot. That alone does not prove a benefit for healthy people, and not everyone tolerates high doses. The right first step is a medical consultation that takes your blood results into account. You may also like our article on NAD+ infusions.
