Outline, definition and expression: The desire for a distinctive jawline

A clearly defined jawline, i.e. the chin and jaw contour, stands for youth, attractiveness and expressiveness. It frames the face, gives structure and creates a harmonious, exciting profile. So it's no wonder that more and more people, regardless of gender, want a more distinctive jawline.

However, with increasing age or genetic predisposition, the jawline can lose its shape. Soft tissue sags, skin sags, fat distributions shift. Stress, tooth squeezing (bruxism) or a pronounced chewing muscle also sometimes contribute to the fact that the contour between chin and neck no longer looks as defined as it used to be.

The good news: There are modern, minimally invasive methods that can be used to specifically and harmoniously accentuate the jawline, completely without surgery. In our practice in Frankfurt, we offer various techniques that are individually tailored to your needs. Whether with filler, threads or botulinum toxin: The aim is always a natural-looking result that subtly underlines your facial features.

What does “jawline” actually mean?

The term Jawline comes from English and describes the lower contour of the face, specifically the line that runs from the chin along the lower jaw to the ears. A distinctive jawline signals attractiveness, youth and symmetry. In aesthetic medicine, it is considered a central element for an exciting, expressive facial profile.

Jawline has become particularly important on social media in recent years, with before-and-after videos, “snatched looks” and so-called “face sculpting” trends. But the aesthetic significance goes far beyond that: A distinctive chin line can not only visually stretch the face and make it appear narrower, but also balance the proportions between neck, cheeks and chin.

The nice thing about it: Not every jawline has to be sharply drawn or masculine. The aim of an aesthetic treatment is rather that the outline fits the individual anatomy, sometimes gentle and feminine, sometimes strong and distinctive. This is exactly where our differentiated approach comes in at Dr. Berkei's practice in Frankfurt.

An overview of methods for emphasizing the jawline

The aesthetic contouring of the jawline can be achieved using various methods, depending on the initial findings, skin structure and desired result. In our practice in Frankfurt, we combine cutting-edge techniques to achieve a natural-looking, harmonious result for every patient.

1. Jawline filler (hyaluronic acid): Instant contour without downtime

Hyaluronic fillers are among the most popular ways to accentuate the jawline. The gel is injected specifically along the chin line to build up volume, compensate for irregularities or achieve sharper definition. This method is particularly suitable for mild sagging, loss of volume or a “soft” jaw area.

advantages:

• Instantly visible results

• Hardly any downtime

• Can also be combined to tone the chin

2nd thread lift: tightening and lifting without scalpel

During thread lifting, absorbable special threads, so-called PDO threads, are inserted under the skin to visually lift and tighten the jawline. The method is particularly suitable for incipient skin sagging or slight “hamster cheek” formation.

advantages:

• Tightening effect through mechanical lifting

• Collagen formation is stimulated

• Natural results over several months

3. Botulinum toxin (masseter treatment): For a slimmer, V-shaped face

Too strong chewing muscles (masseter muscle) can make the face look wide or square. By specifically relaxing this muscle with botulinum toxin, the jawline is narrower and the face appears more finely contoured.

advantages:

• No increase in volume, but a change in shape

• Additional effect on teeth grinding (bruxism)

• effect over several months

Which method is suitable for whom — and how can they be combined?

Not every jawline is the same. While some patients want a clearer outline, others lack volume or are showing the first signs of sagging skin. In our practice in Frankfurt, we develop an individual treatment concept for every initial situation — often by combining several methods.

Filler or threads?

• Hyaluronic fillers are particularly suitable for volume deficiencies or a “soft” jawline. They build up and model contours in a targeted manner.

• Thread lifting is ideal for incipient excess skin or slightly sunken areas of the face, such as the typical “hamster cheek”.

Anyone who wants both more definition and a slight streamlining often benefits from the combination of both methods.

When is botulinum toxin useful?

A distinctive, angular jawline can be caused by overactive chewing muscles, often unnoticed as a result of grinding teeth or pressing hard. In this case, we recommend treatment with botulinum toxin in the masseter muscle. This method gives the face a narrower, more harmonious V-shape, particularly effective for a rather wide face shape.

Practical example

A 35-year-old patient came with the wish for a sharper jawline. She had no volume deficiencies, but she had a very active chewing muscle and incipient sagging in the lower third of her face. After a combination of Masseter botulinum toxin, thread lifting and light hyaluronic modelling, the Contour can be visibly refined and the facial profile redefined without surgery in our practice in Goethestraße.

Jawline treatment process in our practice in Frankfurt

1. Individual advice and analysis

It starts with a detailed consultation with one of our experienced therapists, either Ahmed Elzebair or Dr. med. Markus Mulica. Together, we will analyse your facial structure, discuss your wishes and check which method, or combination, is suitable for your face on Bjästen. If necessary, we also use our image-based VISIA® analysis to be able to optimally assess skin structure, volume distribution and tension conditions.

2. Treatment with filler, threads or botulinum toxin

Depending on the treatment goal, the following is carried out:

  • Filler: targeted injections along the jawbone with highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid to accentuate the contour.
  • Threads: Introduction of self-dissolving PDO threads to lift slightly sunken areas of skin.
  • Botulinum toxin: injection into the masseter muscle to reduce muscle mass in cases of bruxism or strong chewing muscles.

The entire treatment takes around 30-60 minutes, depending on the method. As a rule, it is well tolerated and almost painless with local anesthesia.

3. After treatment

As a rule, they are immediately socially acceptable. Slight swelling or small bruises may occur, but usually subside within a few days. You should refrain from sports, saunas and direct sunlight for the first 48 hours.

Benefits of professional jawline modeling

Today, a defined jaw line stands not only for youthfulness, but also for self-confidence and attractiveness. Whether subtly emphasized or strikingly contoured, an optimised jawline can make the entire facial profile look more harmonious. Targeted modelling offers many advantages, particularly when skin sagging in the lower third of the face increases:

1. Harmonization of facial proportions

A balanced jawline brings balance between cheeks, chin and neck. Especially in combination with a slightly projected chin (profile correction), a coherent overall picture is created.

2. Lifting effect without scalpel

By targeted volume building with hyaluronic fillers or the lifting effect of threads, incipient sagging cookies can be visually reduced. The face appears firmer, fresher and more contoured.

3. Reduction of a masculine jaw angle (for women)

If you have severe chewing muscles, botulinum toxin can help relax the masseter muscles and slim the jawline. Women in particular benefit when a more square face shape becomes softer and more feminine.

4. Emphasis on jawline for men

Many men want a stronger, more angular jawline. Targeted filler injections create a defined, masculine look, completely without implants.

5. Minimally invasive, fast & effective

Jawline treatment is an outpatient procedure that provides noticeable results within a short period of time. Depending on the method, the result lasts from several months to over a year.

Healing process and aftercare after jawline treatment

Whether with fillers, threads or botulinum toxin, jawline modelling is a minimally invasive procedure with a comparatively short downtime. Nevertheless, good aftercare and realistic expectations play a central role in a beautiful, long-lasting result.

Immediately after treatment

Immediately following the injection, slight swelling, redness or minimal bruising may occur, especially when using hyaluronic acid or stitches. These usually subside within 1 to 3 days.

Botulinum toxin does not work immediately. The muscle relaxant effect (e.g. in the masseter area) usually appears after 3 to 7 days, with a maximum after around 14 days.

What should patients consider?

  • No sport in the first 24 to 48 hours
  • No pressure on treated areas (e.g. through tight clothing, sleeping on your side)
  • No makeup on the day of treatment
  • No sauna, solarium or intense sun for 3-5 days
  • No dental treatments or facial massages in the first week

How long does the result last?

  • Hyaluronic filler: approx. 3 to 8 months, depending on the product and metabolism
  • Thread lift: approx. 12 to 18 months, even longer with combined use
  • Botulinum toxin: approx. 4 to 6 months, depending on muscle activity and dosage

After the first result, many patients opt for regular refreshments or a combination of several methods, such as contouring the jawline and reducing the chewing muscles at the same time.

FAQ about jawline contouring with filler, threads and botulinum toxin

How long do the results of a jawline treatment last?

It depends on the method you choose. Hyaluronic fillers usually last 3 to 8 months. Threads can tighten the jawline for up to 18 months. Botulinum toxin breaks down again after about 4 to 6 months.

Is jawline treatment painful?

Most patients find the treatment to be tolerable. If desired, an anesthetic cream can be applied. In sensitive areas such as the masseter muscle, the puncture is minimal and usually barely noticeable.

How quickly will I be socially acceptable again after a jawline injection?

Usually immediately or after a few hours. Slight swelling or small hematomas are possible, but can be easily concealed with makeup. In most cases, nothing is visible after 1—3 days.

What are the risks?

Rare risks include minor bruises, bumps, infections, or asymmetrical results. In our practice, we minimize these through precise technology, sterile conditions and detailed preliminary discussion.

Can I also make the jawline look narrower with the treatment?

Yes, botulinum toxin in masseter can visually slim a square or strong jaw. Especially for teeth grinding (bruxism), this method offers a double effect: therapeutic and aesthetic.

Who is jawline treatment not suitable for?

If there is severe excess skin or severe skin sagging, a surgical lift may be the better solution. In a consultation, we will individually clarify which method best suits your needs.
